The Lesser-Known Microbiome that May Be Impacting Your Life

The conditions of a few of the microbiomes in your body

At some point in your life, you have probably heard about the gut microbiome; the magic community of bacteria that affect everything from your brain to your poop. But, did you know that there are 17 other microbiomes in your body?! 🤯

Turns out, pretty much every organ system has a microbiome! The bacteria in these microbiomes work together to protect you. Sometimes though, the bacteria can go wild and harm you. So why does this matter?

Antimicrobial resistance and increased bacterial infections make it important that we learn how these microbiomes work to create improved treatments. …

We only have 9 years left to prevent irreversible damage from climate change, if we’re lucky! 🤯We have seen about a 2.42-degree increase in temperature from the late 19th century, which might not seem like a lot, but it only takes 5–10 degrees to cause a mass extinction.

Most of us have already seen some of the effects of climate change, such as a rise in overall temperature or an increase in seasonal wildfires. Despite this, very few people are actually taking action to try and stop the progression of global warming, and some still don’t believe it is happening!

In this multiple-part series, I will investigate the potential effects of climate change and global warming, and how they will affect us all. Now is the time to think about our future!

Part 1: Ocean Acidification

What’s happening in our ocean and how it’s affecting us

Recently, we did a lab in science class where we had to use acid. Before we could even do the lab, we had to put on gloves and goggles, and aprons. Even with all the protective gear on, we were still instructed to carefully move the acid using prongs. Now obviously the ocean isn’t the same thing as hydrochloric acid, but it is slowly creeping down the pH scale towards that way. Because of the burning of fossil fuels and other activities that realize carbon emissions, the ocean has become increasingly acidic, resulting in dangerous conditions. …

Revolutionizing biotech by using nanotech

You walk into the living room, your slack pings and while checking the post you bump the candle on the table, which causes the couch to burst into flames. What is the first thing you do?

You shout for everyone to evacuate the building! And call 911!

Your first priority is communicating this problem with others.

Now let’s shrink the scenario down to the cellular level. A cell is hanging out expressing genes and suddenly detects some impending crisis (ex. a cancer cell). Like you in the fire, the cell will also communicate this problem using its own language —…

Using a Neural Network to Identify Brain Tumors and Examine Their Effect of the Connectome

Did you know that over 700,000 Americans are currently living with a brain tumor? And most of these people will continue living with their brain tumor, maybe for the rest of their lives 🤯!

Since 70% of brain tumors are beginning, it is not uncommon for someone to be living with a brain tumor, and have limited effects from it. Even the 30% of tumors that are cancerous might not cause immediate death. But, what do these lumps of out-of-control cells actually mean for the make-up of your brain? And how does this affect you?

Brain tumors are a collection of cells creating a lump in the brain

How a company is using technology to help make fish farming a sustainable food for the future

This is what 1 million people look like. Now imagine this multiplied by 1000. And then picture that multiplied again by 3. That is how many people are at risk of losing their only food source.

According to The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, right now 3 billion people across the world rely on seafood as their main source of nutrition. But unfortunately, we have already depleted 90% of our natural seafood resources! 🤯 So what can we do to make sure that around 40% of our population doesn’t starve?

The Problem

Right now, our population is about 7.8…

Your hands start to sweat. Your breathing increases. The room is getting smaller and smaller. For many of us, this is a common feeling we get called anxiety. But what if you felt this every day, not at the age of 15, 20, or 35, but instead at the age of 5? For 500,000 children ages 3–5, this is the unfortunate reality. Why?

Introduction to Connectivity

So, in order to understand why this happens, we need to first understand what connectivity is specifically in the brain. Have you ever played connect the dots before? …

Everything you need to know about the field of connectomics and its applications

Did you know that scientists can inject a fake memory into mice to make them think they were injured when they weren’t? Crazy, right?! 🤯But imagine if we could do that to humans! Unfortunately, to do this, we would need to actually understand how our brain works. And this is where connectomics comes in, finding the connections in the brain 2005.

A Brief History of Connectomics

I don’t know about you, but I feel like the best way to understand a topic is to first understand the history behind it. …

A possible application of biocomputing that could change lives

When you hear the word PTSD you most likely start thinking about soldiers who have fought overseas in wars. But I doubt you think about that 5-year-old survivor of cancer or even that 15-year-old who had to watch her friends die in her classroom at the hands of a school shooter. And as horrible as it is, I wouldn’t think about them either. Unfortunately, it's not just us who think like this. Of the 15 to 43% of children that are exposed to at least one trauma before they turn 18, only about 4.5% get diagnosed with PTSD. Even though…

How come the poorest 50% are more affected by the climate crisis than the top 1% that caused it?

I remember the first time I first fully understood the huge problem that is the climate crisis. I was in 6th grade and was watching a video of Hurricane Harvey. It would flood the streets and have winds so strong it would knock down trees. That is when I realized that there had to be more going on to cause a major hurricane after a major hurricane. Every year, it seems that there are more natural disasters than the last, and this is not just a coincidence. The climate crisis is having a major impact on the world, yet not…
